20-Year-Old Kimbo's Story

At BARCS, we never say no to an animal in need—and that includes senior animals. Our Love Last Forever Program supports the care of BARCS' homeless senior animals and sponsors their adoption fees in order to shorten their stay at the shelter and find them loving homes. Last year, BARCS' Love Lasts Forever Program sent 700 senior pets to forever homes. Saying "yes" to senior animals is expensive, but it will always be a part of our mission as an open-door shelter.

One of those special seniors was 19-year-old Kimbo, who came through our doors in January 2020 after his owner unfortunately passed away. Thankfully, his photo on our website caught the eye of his forever family, who applied to adopt him right away.

His forever mom, Katheryn, explains, “Kimbo is a happy, calm snuggly dog who clearly had a lot of love left to give. We were lucky enough to be able to adopt him to continue loving him through his golden years.”

As is the case with many senior animals, Kimbo had some medical issues that needed attention. About three months ago, he suffered a stroke, which paralyzed his hind legs. But Kimbo was determined—within a month, he gained full feeling and control of his hind legs and went right back to his normal life.

Kimbo just turned 20 in January, and he’s still on the go. He loves swimming, short walks, playing in snow, snuggling and romping around with his friends.

Katheryn says, “I highly recommend the adoption of senior dogs. They have so much love to give. They have been through so much and given their all and deserve to have a great life all the way up to the finish line. My family is so grateful to have been blessed with the opportunity to share the past year and hopefully more with our amazing senior rescue dog!

“Thank you so much for letting us adopt Kimbo! We love him so very much!”

We’re so happy for you, Kimbo!
