Packing Bags & Saving Lives

When she’s not covered in muddy paw prints, BARCS volunteer Lily Stark is a speech language pathologist for special needs students at the Kennedy Krieger Institute’s Powder Mill Campus. We all know teachers are always spending their own money and time to do special projects for their deserving students, and Ms. Stark is no exception. In her own words, here’s a fun activity she arranged for her students:

“I work at a school for students with special needs. I'm always looking for activities they can do that are functional, productive and meaningful, and that give them the opportunity to practice potential work skills. Of course, my mind is always on how to tie in BARCS! So, I thought of reaching out to companies to see if they could donate samples of treats to put in goodie bags to go home with adopters. Nylabone responded right away; they were very generous, sending so many big bags of goodies for future adopters!

“My students were very eager and excited to help assemble these fun bags at BARCS. Before we arrived, I first taught a lesson about how they are helping—that they're not doing some simple task just because a teacher said so, but actually making a difference in the lives of people and animals. I like my students to know that although they often need help, they are helpers too. Many of them take pride in that.

“This group of students did really well with the task and of course they loved meeting the animals at the shelter. Their teachers even had questions about how to adopt!”

A big thank you to Nylabone for supporting Ms. Stark’s program to give back to the animals in our community.
