Reunited With Senior Dooby

Five days ago, Dooby went missing. His dad had injured his foot and was relying on a friend to help him with letting his dogs out to go potty. Because of Dooby’s senior age, the friend let his guard down, turning his back on Dooby while he was searching for a spot to do his business. When he turned back around, Dooby was gone.

Dooby is just a few days shy from 17 years old. He is consistently on daily heart medication. The race to find Dooby was a serious emergency. Dooby’s dad posted all over social media, asking everyone to please keep an eye out for his baby. You see, Dooby and his dad have been together since he was just a puppy—this love story couldn’t and shouldn’t end in tragedy. But the situation grew more and more grave everyday without any sightings of Dooby.

There are lots of Lost & Found community Facebook groups in Baltimore and the surrounding counties. Members of our resource team scan them every day (and often at night too) in hopes of finding matches. Team member Lisa G. saw the post about Dooby—with his heart condition, cloudy eyes and super-senior age—and her heart was immediately invested in the situation.

Today, a little senior dog, who was in very bad shape, came into BARCS as a stray. Our vet techs tried to call the number on the collar, but it wasn’t going through. They asked Lisa if she could please come and grab the info on the tag and see if she could, in any way, make a connection. Or, if not, could she make sure we posted a photo of the lost dog on BARCS’ Facebook page and in the community groups. In the meantime, they were going to come up with a treatment plan because the dog’s health was in real trouble.

Lisa walked back to the medical wing and immediately she knew the dog. It was Dooby. She raced back to her computer to find the Lost & Found post Dooby’s dad had made, which thankfully had an updated phone number.

20 minutes later, at 4:30 p.m. today, Dooby was back in his dad’s arms and received his heart medication. We snapped a few quick pictures of the reunion before the pair were off to their family veterinarian to make sure Dooby’s missed days of medication are closely monitored.

Our staff can’t stop talking about the immediate bond they could see between Dooby and his dad. We can’t dream up a better way to start the weekend. ❤
