Spotlight on GeoVets

At BARCS, we believe that animal welfare isn't just a shelter issue—it's a community issue. Part of our lifesaving mission includes providing resources and services to help keep pets where they belong: in their homes. Today, we want to feature a nonprofit organization called GeoVeterinary International that has partnered with BARCS to provide critically needed medical services to pet owners in need in Baltimore.

Dr. Joe Zulty, the Chief Medical Officer of Essex River Middle Veterinary Center, which is a Franky Fund partner for BARCS, founded GeoVets with the goal to provide veterinary services at no cost to communities in need all over the world, including central America and southeast Asia. Due to the lack of international travel during COVID, GeoVets recently added a new mission to their organization: to provide free veterinary services in Baltimore to underserved, local communities.

Dr. Zulty reached out to BARCS Community Pet Program Coordinator Kaitlyn Thomas to organize a free medical clinic at Sacred Heart of Jesus in Highlandtown on May 21, 2022. Well over 200 animals were seen for veterinary care, microchipping and free spay/neuter vouchers, which resulted in over 40 surgeries at BARCS several weeks later.

Dr. Zulty shared, “I have always been proud of BARCS and the unending hard work that you do.  I therefore am glad to reconnect, this time with my nonprofit group GeoVets!”

A second clinic date is scheduled for November 19 at Sacred Heart of Jesus. Both Kaitlyn and Dr. Zulty are very much looking forward to it!

Thank you again, Dr. Zulty, for all you do for animals in Baltimore City.
