đŸŸHappy Tail: Jarvis’s Journey from Shelter Pup to Island Adventurer

We’re thrilled to share Rufus’s (formerly Jarvis at BARCS) Happy Tail! This chill, affectionate senior pup won hearts at BARCS with his gentle snorts and love for head and butt scratches. In just a year, he’s shown that a steady heart and a little love can change lives. From a foster fail to international travel to island adventurer, Jarvis’s journey proves that age doesn’t slow down a loving, brave dog—it only makes him wiser, sweeter, and more devoted. Here’s an update from his family:

“ A year ago today, Rufus (fka Jarvis) came to stay with us as a foster. In very short order, we realized that this chill, loving boy was perfect for our family, so we "foster failed." In the month following, we learned that my job would be taking us to Hawaii for three years. Though it has been a year filled with transition challenges and it was a LOT to get him here (Google “taking pets to Hawaii” if you’re interested, lol), he sailed through the disorienting experience of multiple hotels and a 10+ hour direct flight from JFK to Honolulu and has since settled quite nicely into island life.

“His favorite activities now include chasing geckos on the lanai, joining me for yoga, morning walks along the water to greet the sunrise (and the tourists taking pictures of said sunrise), attempting to make friends with the stray cats—and chickens and goats—in the neighborhood, and, of course, soaking up pets and procuring as many snacks as he possibly can. He’s still not sure about the beach (waves freak him out), but we’re working on it, and I hope that someday soon he’ll be brave enough to kayak or paddleboard with me in beautiful Kaneohe Bay.

“This boy has been such a blessing. He helped me through the pain of losing our senior doggo in June and is faithfully by my side always, reminding me each day what love and devotion look like. Mahalo, BARCS, for bringing this awesome guy into our lives. He is very loved, and I couldn't imagine the days without him. I am truly blessed to be his kahu!”

Jarvis’s story is a sweet reminder of how a gentle, loving dog can truly thrive with a little patience, plenty of love, and a dash of adventure—whether he’s sniffing out new sights, investigating neighborhood critters, or curling up with the people who adore him. That’s the real magic of a Happy Tail!
