From Little Paws to Big Paws: A Family’s Adventure in Adopting a New Pet

We often hear fellow pet lovers proudly identifying as a “cat person,” “small dog enthusiast,” “big dog lover,” or even “bunny aficionado.” Let us share a “Happy Tail” about a family that initially identified as the “small dog” family, before their cherished Shi-Tzus crossed the rainbow. Once they made the decision to adopt again, they weren’t expecting to have their hearts leaning towards a bigger pup. This special pupper was named Double Bubble at BARCS, Bubbles for short, and she arrived at BARCS as a stray. While patiently waiting for a loving home, little did she know that her life would change forever that fateful day.

And without further ado, let’s hear it straight from Bubbles' family:

“Last October, we had to put down our second family dog, leaving our family devastated. As you can imagine, our 12-year-old son was very upset after having to say goodbye to our second dog in three months. Our house seemed eerily quiet for the ensuing month. We then decided that maybe adopting a dog was something we should look into. Feeling that BARCS was the best fit for an adoption agency for our family, we made the decision to adopt a female dog. The next consideration was whether a larger dog was something we should pursue. If you can imagine, as former Shih Tzu parents, a pit bull was something new to us. After seeing this beautiful white female pit bull named “Bubbles,” we filled out the online application. Following a meeting with Mary, a BARCS staff member, and spending time with Bubbles, we knew she would be the perfect addition to our home.

“We chose to rename Bubbles to Georgia as we are a University of Georgia family. It took a few weeks for Georgia to get fully comfortable in our home. Now, here we are a year later, she is truly the princess of this castle. She is the most loving, kind, and affectionate dog a family could ask for. She sleeps in bed with us, taking turns between our room and our son’s room. She loves to cuddle and never leaves our sides. We are so grateful for BARCS and Georgia for completing our home. Enclosed are some pics and a quick video of her 2nd birthday.”

Big or small, purring or wagging, love knows no restrictions, and “small dog” people can become “big dog” people when love comes calling. A big dog can have the charm of a small one, and vice versa—matching souls, not sizes. Bubbles' story has filled our hearts with joy, and we're grateful to Bubbles' family for giving her a loving home.
