Bunni's Big Adventure

From adopter James S.:

Prior to adopting Bunni, we knew about BARCS mainly through friends who had adopted dogs, events (largely beer-drinking) and people we know who have volunteered. For certain, we had very positive feelings towards BARCS, but we also had two amazing old lady bulldogs and lived in an east Baltimore rowhouse…so we had no vacancies at the time. That all changed in the winter/spring of 2017 when we lost both our girls within three months, one from cancer and the other from being a very old bulldog (13 years old). Nothing is quite as gutting as losing friends back to back. My wife and I were resolved to take a break from dogs. That did not last thanks to our friend and BARCS volunteer Robin Duval.

Robin said she knew that we weren’t looking to adopt a dog, but we really should look at this bully-baby who had just been removed from Pawject Runway because she had an URI. We decided to go and at least pay a visit. It was May 5th, 2017. We went and our first experience choosing a dog at BARCS was literally over nearly as soon as soon as it began. Cinnabun came into the room, shyly walked up to my wife and me, and then rolled over onto her belly. We needed this dog--she was a bright ray of sunshine coming through to two people who were still grieving from the recent losses. We signed up immediately. That led to us being able to adopt her. She became “Bunni” to us.

We took her home and it did take a minute to adjust to each other. A one-year-old bully mix has about 100x as much energy as old bulldogs. We moved to a place with a yard. Bunni loved it. We started taking her to local breweries. Bunni loved it. We started traveling with her. Bunni loved it.

Robin easily pressed us into doing an Instagram page devoted to Bunni (@bullibunni). We’ve used this to provide an account of our adventures with Bunni. To date, she has visited 21 states, 121 different craft beer establishments, and has developed a network of some very interesting rescued pets. Her favorite arboretums are in Asheville, NC, Norfolk,VA and Ann Arbor, MI. She likes breweries that offer free water and dog cookies. She’s great with kids, loves both her sets of grandparents, and has earned her AKC certificate as a canine good citizen. She doesn’t actually drink beer, because hops are poison for dogs, but she loves going to new places and making new friends—people and dogs.

  • Farthest South brewery – Swan Brewing, Lakeland, FL

Bunni brings a smile to everyone she meets. She loves to play ball, snuggle, and go for hikes. We are fortunate to have her in our life.
