Don't Underestimate a Shy Cat

As we know, it's not just humans who react to new environments. This rings particularly true in the case of Max, a cat who came into BARCS' care at the beginning of the year when his previous owner could no longer care for him. Leaving the only home he had ever known for the shelter was a frightening experience for Max. In response, he coped the only way he knew how – by withdrawing from others. Despite our best efforts to ensure a pleasant and productive stay for our shelter animals, Max struggled with adapting to his new surroundings in preparation for his future loving home.

Fortunately for Max, Jaclyn was visiting the shelter looking to adopt a cat to share her love with. She noticed Max and felt that there was more to this withdrawn cat. After thinking about it for a day, she decided to come back for him. And so, Max found an adopter. Here's what she has to say:

“We adopted Max on February 1, 2023. He was the first cat I saw, and I just couldn't get him out of my mind. He was completely terrified and shut down. He had a blank stare and would not eat a bite of the multiple trays of food left for him. He had pulled out most of his fur on his hind legs and part of his tail. I took 24 hours to "think," and I just knew he had to come home with me.

“During the first two months in his new home, Max spent most of his time hiding under the couch or on a shelf in my closet. He would only come out at night to eat and use his litter box. I would lay on the floor every day, petting him and giving him treats while he was in hiding, just giving him the much-needed time.

“Fast forward to today, Max currently takes up all the room in our queen-size bed. He is the most affectionate and loving cat I have ever been around. He LOVES being brushed and having his belly rubbed. He adores fuzzy blankets and has very specific ones that he snuggles on. He enjoys listening to the birds outside and on YouTube when we leave him home alone (spoiled 😹). He loves food so much that we had to buy a slow feeder so he doesn’t eat too fast! All of his fur has grown back, and he is the softest, fluffiest boy. He is SO loved, and I know how much he loves us as well. He rarely goes under the couch anymore, even when the vacuum is out! He continues to improve every single day, and we cannot thank BARCS enough for bringing this sweet boy into our lives.”

We are thrilled to learn about Max's new life. Jaclyn, thank you for truly seeing Max and offering him a second chance in a loving home!
