A Summer Tradition 10 Years in the Making

At BARCS, we’re surrounded by a wonderful community of donors and volunteers. Among these amazing individuals is a young girl, Gabby, who dedicates her time every summer to collect donations for BARCS and our deserving animals.

Here is part of her school report, which talks about her experience collecting donations for BARCS:

“For the past 10 summers, I've organized a community donation collection drive for BARCS—an animal shelter in Baltimore, MD that houses hundreds of dogs and cats available for adoption. At the start of each summer, I utilize my graphic design skills to create posters that promote the donation drive. During this recent summer on 6/31/23, I crafted the poster and displayed it at various locations, including my gymnastics school. I also shared it across multiple social media platforms, where I've found I receive the most donations.

“I gather a wide variety of donations, ranging from used towels, litter boxes, and smooth peanut butter to baby wipes, dog and cat food, shower curtains, gloves, Kongs, collars, crates, and much more. Throughout the summer, I dedicate two days each week to pick up the donations, and my parents kindly allow me to store them in the garage. As summer break draws to a close, all the collected items will be transported to BARCS. In previous years, we required multiple trucks due to the sheer volume of donations that couldn't fit into just one.

“This project holds a special place in my heart, and each year, it has grown significantly. During my time at my Middle School, I collaborated with Mr. Keller to create hundreds of blankets and toys for the animal shelter as part of our middle school community service day. As I transitioned from 8th grade, I was honored to receive the Community Service award for this initiative at my graduation ceremony.

“Through this journey, I've come to understand that even a small effort combined with effective coordination can bring profound assistance to hundreds of animals in need. Now entering my 11th-grade year, I'm eager to see if my school can once again organize a community day dedicated to supporting BARCS."

Thank you so much Gabby for your dedication and kindness!
