Petco Love Makes Half-Million Dollar Investment In BARCS

BALTIMORE, MD — May 2021: BARCS Animal Shelter is thrilled to announce that it has been awarded a three-year $500,000 grant from Petco Love, formerly known as the Petco Foundation, to support several lifesaving programs, including a new and official lost and found program with enhanced services, adoptions, trap, neuter and release (TNR) of community cats, and alternative placement for cats who don’t do well in a home environment.

Thanks to Petco, BARCS is specifically able to expand our lost and found program by putting an emphasis on dedicated staffing, enhanced services and upgraded technology through Petco's Love Lost facial recognition software, a nationwide tool that both our community and our shelter can easily use.

Each year, BARCS is growing, evolving and working to implement programs that benefit animals in need and support families with pets. This progress has been made possible by innovative, lifesaving programs and community efforts. The Petco Love grant will help to further increase save rates by working to find positive outcomes for every individual animal.

“This grant allows us to continue to bring our pets out into the community to promote adoption; reunite missing pets with their families; and work to decrease the population of outdoor community cats through spay/neuter,” said Jen Brause, Executive Director of BARCS. “We are beyond thrilled to see these vital programs continue to thrive. Thank you to Petco Love for helping us make a lifesaving difference in Baltimore.”

About BARCS
The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter (BARCS) is the largest companion animal shelter in Maryland and the only open-admission shelter in Baltimore City. BARCS takes in more than 10,000 animals yearly—including dogs, cats, small companion animals, wildlife, farm animals and exotics. BARCS serves as a resource to the community for citizens and their animals in need. In just a few years, BARCS significantly increased the number of animals saved from 2% in 2005 (under Animal Control) to over 90% dogs and cats saved in 2019. The shelter’s services include: providing housing and lifesaving care to homeless animals, public education and outreach, tracking lost and found pets, offering low cost vaccinations and microchip clinics, pet licensing, and the Trap, Neuter and Return (TNR) of community cats. In addition to the aforementioned services, BARCS provides families and individuals the opportunity to adopt loving companion animals and save lives. As Maryland’s largest open admission shelter, BARCS does not turn away any animal in need of shelter, food and a loving touch. BARCS grants refuge to every abandoned, neglected, abused, lost or surrendered animal that comes through our door—staggering 35 or more animals are surrendered to BARCS every single day of the year.
