Fourth of July Pet Safety Tips!

WOOF! America’s loudest holiday is just around the corner 🎆 Did you know that more animals get lost on the Fourth of July than any other day of the year? BARCS is no exception to this annual occurrence. Fireworks may be fun for people to watch, but the booming noises can spook our beloved furry family members.

So, what can you do to make sure your pets stay safe?

⭐️ Before the fun begins, be sure that your pet is microchipped and licensed with your local county and that the information on the microchip and the license is up-to-date and accurate.

⭐️ Upload your pet’s photo to Petco Love Lost, a free, centralized lost and found tool is a single database that uses patented facial recognition technology to make finding lost pets quicker and easier. It is used by the majority of shelters in our community, including BARCS, to display all lost and found pets.

⭐️ If the party is at your home, give your dog an energetic play period before guests arrive for the celebration. If you have a cat, or other small pet, be sure to remind each guest to be careful coming in and out of the house, so that he/she does not escape.

⭐️ If your pet accompanies you outside, make sure their collar with an up-to-date and visible ID tag is on.

⭐️ Keep charcoal, fireworks, sparklers and glow sticks away from curious animals.

⭐️ When it’s time for fireworks, bring your pets inside to a quiet room with their favorite toys. You may want to play gentle music or talk radio to cover the outside noises.

⭐️ And when the noisy fun is over, check on your furry BFF! We bet they’ll be happy you did. ❤

P.S. If your pet escapes your home and is lost, or if you find a lost dog, please check BARCS’ website for a full guide on what to do next. A huge thank you to Petco Love for funding our Lost & Found program to help us make matches and get lost animals back home where they belong.
