The New Big Pup on Campus!

We love hearing Happy Tails from our adopters! Check out this great story from new BARCS adopter Mackenzie P. and her pup Cash, formerly known as Marlo at BARCS:

“All my life, I’ve grown up around dogs. In my freshman year of high school, my family got a puppy—he was my responsibility to train and care for, so I knew I could handle a dog on my own. I’ve wanted to adopt a dog since last year, but the timing wasn’t right just yet.

“I grew up in Baltimore City, so I was familiar with the shelters and rescues in the area. However, many of these organizations won’t adopt an animal to anyone under 21. So, BARCS stood out to me because they allow people who are 18 and older to adopt. Once I returned home from college for the summer, I began checking the BARCS website everyday (it became part of my morning routine), and I would visit the shelter often. I also spoke to my landlord about their pet policies so I knew their expectations.

“On June 26, I got off from work early and my mom asked if I wanted to head down to the shelter; of course I said yes! We took a walk around and when we came across Marlo in his kennel we both gasped because he was so cute. He was so scared and nervous; he had been put on a behavior hold, so I was unable to meet him that day. But now, my mom and I were determined to meet him.

“On June 29, Marlo was available for adoption! I arrived at the shelter 10 minutes before opening. I couldn’t wait to meet him! Once Marlo came outside, I saw his true personality. He was so alert and bubbly, and he always had a big smile on his face—I fell in love. The volunteer who brought him out to me noted how he hadn’t acted the way he did around me with anyone else in the shelter. It felt like fate. I adopted him that day and left BARCS with the biggest smile on my face.

“Marlo, now known as Cash, came home with me a few days later (he still needed to be neutered). Cash has adjusted fabulously—he met my family’s two dogs and many children in our neighborhood. He’s a smart pup who learned his new name quickly, too!

“I’m a rising junior at Salisbury University and live in off-campus housing with my sorority sisters. August 1 was moving day, so I spent much of the summer packing my things and getting ready for school. My dad, brother and I packed up the moving truck while my mom said her goodbyes to Cash (whom she absolutely adores). My brother and I drove the car with Cash—he slept pretty much the whole way except for pee breaks and to see the scenery as we drove over the Bay Bridge. Once we arrived at the new house, he jumped out of the car and met my roommates. Cash was a little nervous at first, of course, but now he loves cuddling up on the couch with them, playing with them and going on walks.

“Cash has adjusted wonderfully to life as a college pup and adores living with six girls who spoil him to no end. I want to thank you all at BARCS for giving me the greatest gift; Cash has quite literally turned my life around and makes me so happy. He is so incredibly loved!"
